The project
A ground-up 700 sq. ft. detached ADU built in the backyard of a residential property in Encino, Los Angeles. The modern unit features a flat roof, 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, an open-concept living area, and clean contemporary finishes designed to complement the existing home.
A ground-up detached build rather than a conversion, which is the other main route to an ADU and the one that gives you the most freedom over layout: nothing about the design is inherited from a structure that already exists.
At 700 square feet with two bedrooms and a single bathroom, this is close to the size most homeowners have in mind when they picture a backyard unit. The flat roof and the contemporary detailing were chosen to sit alongside the existing house rather than imitate it.
